Bussell Island Swim

BUSSELL ISLAND SWIM

After visiting and swimming Bussell Island informally for years, it became the obvious choice to host K.O.W.S. newest open water swim race. The Bussell Island Swim hosts 3 different distances: 1-mile, 2.6-km, and a 5.2-km swim. The swims are current-neutral, with the 1-mile course fully visible from a paved greenway atop the earthen Tellico dam. The 2.6-km loop takes our swimmers from the 1-mile course on an adventure around a small tree-covered island further out into quiet Tellico Lake. For full information on the race, check out the tabs below.

Tucked in the hills of beautiful East Tennessee, Bussell Island is located at the Western terminus of the Little Tennessee River, before it joins the Tennessee River at TVA’s Fort Loudon Dam. Bussell Island is connected to the mainland via the Fort Loudon and Tellico Dams.

Originally inhabited by various Native American Cultures, the island is believed to be the location of the capital Coste - a Missippian Period chieftom visited by the famous explorer, Henry DeSoto.

Fast forward 1,500+ years and Bussell Island is home to a beautiful riverfront park with boating access, nature trails, a small sand beach, and a historic preserve. With its calm waters, Bussell Island is the perfect setting to host an open water swim race for swimmers of all abilities.
