WHO:
Knoxville Open Water Swimmers (locally known as KOWS) is Knoxville’s largest (and only) weekly open water swim club! The KOWS are a diverse group of swimmers ranging from young professionals to those in their 70s. Our members’ experiences range from former collegiate swimmers to local triathletes to amazing recreational open water swimmers.
In addition to our “swimming KOWS,” members also include a fantastic water support team of volunteer kayak/SUP pilots who keep our swimmers safe in the river. We always welcome paddlers that want to help keep swimmers safe while enjoying a quiet evening paddle.
WHEN / WHERE:
Thursday evenings @ Suttree Landing Park Landing, Knoxville, TN.
Generally, KOWS weekly operates from the start of May through the end of September based on water levels and weather conditions.
6:00 - Swimmers and Pilots arrive and SIGN IN
6:15- Water safety debrief and weather report
6:20- Support kayak and SUP pilots in the water
6:30- Swimmers in the water
7:30- All swimmers and water support out
After the swim we head to a local restaurant/bar for drinks and food and to say thanks to the pilots!
WHAT ELSE?:
Due to the inherently hazardous conditions swimming in open water, all swimmers should be able to tread water comfortably AND continuously swim a mile in a pool in under 45 minutes. The currents can be strong and safety comes first. You should never swim on your own. The TN river is an active river and open to boat and barge traffic. If you’re unsure if you are ready, reach out to us- we’d love to hear from you!
What you need to swim:
Brightly colored (neon) swim cap
ALL swimmers must be USMS annual or 30-day trial members for insurance purposes.
We strongly recommend: Inflatable tow buoy & goggles. Wear a wetsuit if you want.
